What every Conservative needs to know
PART FOUR – The Current Progressive Movement [1960 to the present]
Modern day Progressivism wrapped itself around the social change that was occurring during the turbulent 60’s. Some of the popular caused were Civil Rights, the Feminists Movement and the Environmental Movement. The Progressives and the Far Left Liberals used these causes to rally support by demonizing anyone who disagreed with them. You were called a Raciest or Anti-Woman or a Destroyer of Mother Nature. The first two are words that send terror through any politician who would stand up to the Left. Add to those causes Gay Rights, Immigration Reform and the Atheist’s and you have a perfect plan of attack. The Far Left has had and continues to have willing and powerful allies in the News Media. In this final Part 4 I will attempt to tie together all the bits and pieces that are coming together to form the perfect storm the Progressives have sought since their beginning. Numerous hyperlinks will be provided for the reader to read and study at your leisure as it would be to cumbersome to give a detailed explanation here.
The turbulent times of the 60’s were the perfect time for the Progressives and the Far Left to infiltrate the many different popular causes that were taking root. Although civil protests and demonstrations have always been a part of the American history, even dating back as far as the Boston Tea Party they reached new intensity because of the unpopularity of the Vietnam War. Radical organizations such as S.D.S [Students for a Democratic Society], the Weathermen, the Black Panthers, the Feminist Movement and L.B.G.T. Movement [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender] gained prominence and spawned future leaders in pop culture and the government. Some of there were Jane Fonda, Jerry Ruben, Abby Hoffman, Bernadine Dorn, Bill Ayers, Tom Hayden, Bobby Seale and William Kunstler to name just a few. Psychedelic Drugs such as LSD, Magic Mushrooms and Cannabis became popular and readily available. The anti-war movement spawned a wave of conscientious objectors or draft dodgers as they were called many of whom fled to Canada to escape arrest. The Feminist Movement was gaining popularity with women marching and burning their bras. Gay Liberation advocates were emerging and many famous people were as the popular phrase at that time suggests [coming out of the closet]. The Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum with people like Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and of course Martin Luther King Jr.
Politics were not to be left out of the Progressives plans, Ralph Nader became the De Facto leader of the Progressive movement preaching consumer rights and the environment. Nader ran 6 times for the Presidency on the Green Party ticket, as a write in candidate and as an Independent. Needless to say he lost and lost big each time but Nader used the chance each time to argue what a lot of people called a radical agenda. The Progressives joined the fight of every group that was seeking change no matter how radical because their goal was to turn the U.S. into a Socialist State.
Other popular causes were the Environmental Movement, Nuclear Energy, Fossil Fuels and the growing movement for Global Warming. All popular causes and all easily infiltrated by Progressive operatives. Organizations such as Green Peace, the Sierra Club, Earth First, ELF [Earth Liberation Front] and P.E.T.A… Protests and demonstrations were held for Save the Whales, the Rocky Mountain Spotted Owl and the Delta Smelt. A central element in all of these cases is the idea that the government can control and manage these things better than private industry. All of the five previously mentioned organizations have been involved in Eco-Terrorism and have been responsible not only for property damage but the loss of thousands of jobs for the working people affected by legislation passed to protect these species.
We will skip past Nixon and Ford and stop at Jimmy Carter, Carter wasn’t the most energetic liberal and was a disappointment to the Progressives but he did manage to get two new agencies established. The Department of Energy and the Department of Education thereby establishing more government control, the darling of the Progressives and Liberals. Carter also managed to get the Panama Canal Treaty [Torrijos–Carter Treaties] giving back the Panama Canal after 1999.
Next we will bypass Reagan that both the Progressives and Liberals hated because of his fight against big government. We will do the same with Bush the elder, although not a true conservative but more of a moderate the Progressives didn’t gain much ground under his administration. We will go instead to Bill Clinton a dedicated Liberal and his wife Hillary a self proclaimed Progressive.
William Jefferson Clinton
Bill Clinton is one of those people who generates strong emotions from the American people, there seems to be no middle ground and people either love him or hate him. Clinton garnered many nicknames such as the First Black President, the Golden Throat, Slick Willie just to name a few. Clinton gained fanatical support after saying just four words, “I feel your pain”. He delivered them with such emotion both in his voice and facial expression that his admirers ignored any faults he may have had and supported him without question. Being a committed Liberal Clinton tried to lead from the far left after he was elected but found he had to move to the middle to get anything done. Some of his successes were NAFTA [North American Trade Agreement], he also implemented Don’t Ask Don’t Tell into the military and Welfare Reform. Clinton suffered his biggest defeat with the failure of instituting his 1993 Health Care Reform that he campaigned for. Hillary Clinton chaired the committee that drew up the plans and details but met huge resistance from the Republicans who argued that it would give the government too much control and the program would be too costly. It was defeated and put aside until the current administration implemented it by a Democratically controlled Executive office and Congress. It is currently being litigated in the SCOTUS [Supreme Court Of The United States] and is expected to be overturned for being unconstitutional. One of the other important bills passed was the Brady Bill that was fought against by gun advocates like the NRA as being unconstitutional because of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America and featured in the Bill of Rights.
Clinton’s second lame duck term was consumed by the Monica Lewinsky scandal that led to his Impeachment although he was not voted out of office by Congress.
Barak Hussein Obama
We will now move to the present, the incumbent President is Barak Hussein Obama and the Progressives and the Far Left Liberals have been greatly emboldened. Obama has made it a point to surround himself with Cabinet members and Czars and Personal Advisors. that fall into each category. His Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is a self proclaimed Progressive. Barak Obama so far has championed the Progressive’s agenda aggressively with the passing of these Legislative Bills, Executive Orders and Proclamations. His biggest piece of Legislation has been the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or Obama Care. This Legislation was pushed through the Democratically controlled Congress along party lines. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi pushed the Bill through the House of Representatives with her now famous quote of “We have pass the bill so you can find out what is in it”.
The Bill was challenged by 27 states with it finally ending up in the Supreme Court who will decide on the Bill’s Constitutionality. The Bill has proved to be unpopular with a majority of the American people and is expected to be ruled unconstitutional. Immigration has also been in the forefront as states pass their own legislation to control illegal immigration. Obama has tasked the Attorney General with filing lawsuits stop states from implementing the laws they passed with Arizona being the main but not the only target. Arizona’s law will now be decided by the Supreme Court and its outcome will affect many other states that have either passed or will vote on similar laws. Other controversial issues have been the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Bill passed by Bill Clinton, and Military Budget Cuts.
As the reader can see it has been the agenda over the years for the Progressives to undercut the norms America has lived by of self sufficiency and less governmental control. The Progressives have sought to change the laws to encourage more governmental control and public dependence on the government to provide all things for all people. A careful study of the Constitution and the ideals of the Founding Fathers will show America was established as a Christian Nation with the government subservient to the will of its people. What will the future hold for the United States? Many people believe, including this author, the outcome of the next Presidential election will set the course America will follow. Will the country continue towards a Progressive Socialist Nation under Obama or will it return to fiscal responsibility and less governmental control. Elections have consequences both good and bad, only time will tell what the consequences of the coming election will bring.
