Sequestration and America’s Shrinking Military
- 1. The action of taking legal possession of assets until a debt has been paid or other claims have been met.
- 2. The action of taking forcible possession of something; confiscation.
Because of a dysfunctional government that is unable to deal decisively with a soaring national debt, huge cuts in Americas military budget are about to take place. Some of the proposed cuts would include cutting the nuclear arsenal down to 500 deployed warheads. These would include air launched, sub launched and surface launched from land and naval vessels. While America’s enemies are expanding their nuclear weapons platforms and war heads America is planning on slashing both. The Army is planning on reductions of active duty personnel from 547,400 down to 360,000. The Marine Corps will downsize its active duty members from 202,000 down to 145,000 and reduce the Marine Corps Expeditionary Strike Groups from 10 down to 6. The U.S. Navy may drop its Operational Carrier Fleet from 12 down to 8 plus the decommissioning of the Nimitz, Eisenhower and Vincent carriers and the cancelation of 60 F-35 Strike Fighters. Also the Naval Submarine force can expect to reduce its procurement rate of Fast Attack Submarines (SSN) from 2 per year to 1 along with the decommissioning of 4 active Guided Missile Submarines (SSGN). The Navy would also be forced to cancel production of 16 (DDG-51) Destroyers and the Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) may end with the 4 now under construction and the cancellation of a further 20. It has been suggested that 14 older Perry Class Frigates (FFG-7) could be refitted to serve a purpose they were never designed for. The U.S. Air Force could be forced to eliminate 6 Strike Force Wings and accelerate the retirement of F-15 and F-16 fighter and fighter bomber aircraft and cancel the purchase of 301 F-35’s. A further reduction of weapon platforms may include termination of the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, the V-22 Osprey, and review the Missile Defense System, all at a time when China and North Korea are rapidly developing their nuclear warheads and ICBM systems. Cuts will also take place in the Pentagons civilian work force along with additional cuts in military benefits ranging from reduced housing, pay raises, healthcare and retirement benefits. There are also suggestions that maintenance personnel and parts could be reduced with cuts in Research and Development and Intelligence programs.
America’s military will have the smallest number of personnel and equipment since the end of WW1. In a time when enemy nations are rapidly building up their military forces America is planning drastic cuts. History shows the danger of a weak American military resulting in the past with WW1, WW2 and Korea. A weak American military has always and will continue to embolden America’s enemies putting America again at risk. President George W. Bush had the reputation of being a “Cowboy”, but after his September 11, 2011 actions the world stood in fear of attacking the U.S. because they were unsure of President Bush’s response would be. With the disengagement of President Obama and a failing Foreign Policy we have seen countries all over the world thumb their collective noses at him and his administration. There is great turmoil in world finances and terrorist activities and America is seen as a disengaged bystander unwilling to get involved and President Obama seems happy to lead from behind. A total lack of response to the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on America’s Consulate and CIA Annex in Benghazi Libya that resulted in the death of 4 Americans has plunged the entire Middle East into a chaotic situation. With the proposed massive cuts to America’s military threatened by sequestration, America’s military readiness will be in question and the danger of future attack becomes even greater. America is strong only when her military is strong and that future strength is now dependent on a President and Administration determined to reduce its strength to pre WW1 status. The Congress seems incapable of avoiding sequestration with most Democrats actually embracing it.
