The 2nd Amendment
The Old North Church of Boston served a pivotal role in the time prior to the Revolutionary War. It was chosen because at the time it was the tallest building in Boston and could be easily seen by all. It was decided to use lanterns at night to signal the people that the British were on their way to attack. In the steeple signal lanterns would be hung using the prearranged signal of one lantern for a land march or two lanterns if the British were to advance by boat across the Charles River. Hence the words “One if by land, two if by sea” have been immortalized. The steeple therefore was manned by a Sentinel to warn of impending danger and is an appropriate symbol to use today for the continuation of warnings to America about the dangers of the liberal left and an out of control government. I will use this as a symbol of alert in the future to point out new and impending dangers to the Republic and the People.
Today America faces many dangers from an out of control government such as the out of control budget that threatens the prosperity of America, a health care system that seeks to make all Americans dependent on the state, a foreign policy that threatens Americas standing in the world and the alienation of Americas allies and the attack on the 2nd Amendment where I will focus on for now.
The Liberal Left and the Progressives have for many years attempted to eliminate the Constitutional guarantees provided in the 2nd Amendment that gives the clearly stated right for all Americans to keep and bear arms. The latest onslaught has been brought on by the recent mass shootings by mentally impaired individuals that used what is being called “Assault Weapons”, a generic term that has no actual meaning as the correct term is Assault Rifles and those rifles are already prohibited by Federal Law to be owned by private citizens except under strict Federal Licensing. The anti-gun advocates including a willing media portray the popular AR-15 as the evil assault weapon of choice for mass murderers. This is because it “Looks” like something the military would use and therefore is dangerous in the hands of
sportsmen and shooting enthusiasts. An AR-15 has the same characteristics as a standard looking semi automatic rifle.
The two rifles pictured are both semi automatic rifles in caliber .223. Both have the same accuracy and rate of fire yet the rifle on the bottom is considered by the left and the media to be an assault weapon because it looks like a military type assault rifle. The top rifle is a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle and can be fitted with a 20 and a 30 round magazine. The bottom rifle is a Adcor BEAR GI AR-15 Semi Auto Rifle that can also receive up to a 30 round magazine. The top rifle is considered a hunting rifle and the bottom one considered an assault weapon because it “Looks Dangerous”. While we are at it I would also like to point out the difference between a “Clip” and a “Magazine”. A clip is used to load a magazine but to the liberals who fail to take the time to understand what they are talking about they are both used to describe the actual magazine.
In 1994 then President Bill Clinton got the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, H.R. 3355 passed better known as the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. This set up certain criteria’s for defining weapons that would be considered assault weapons such as.
[i] In the former U.S. law, the legal term assault weapon included certain specific semi-automatic firearm models by name (e.g., Colt AR-15, TEC-9, non-select-fire AK-47s produced by three manufacturers, and Uzis) and other semi-automatic firearms because they possess a minimum set of cosmetic features from the following list of features:
Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device that enables launching or firing rifle grenades, though this applies only to muzzle mounted grenade launchers and not those mounted externally)
This law expired on March 4, 2004 and although attempts have been made to renew it all has failed to pass Congress. The American Constitution and specifically the 2nd Amendment are once again being attacked and this time the plan has expanded way beyond the 1994 law. Senator Diane Feinstein has introduces an Assault Weapons Ban that makes the highly disputed 1994 Ban pale by comparison. The Bill as submitted would ban 150 (vs. 6 on the 1994 Bill) firearms as well as restrictions to include the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 157 of the most commonly-owned military-style assault weapons. It also bans an additional group of assault weapons that can accept a detachable ammunition magazine and have “one” or more military characteristics. The bill also bans large-capacity magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Also in the Bill there are provisions that requires background checks on all future transfers of assault weapons covered by the legislation, including sale, trade and gift; Requires that grandfathered assault weapons be stored safely using a secure gun storage or safety device in order to keep them away from prohibited persons; and prohibits the sale or transfer of high-capacity ammunition feeding devices currently in existence. These devices allow shooters to fire numerous rounds in rapid succession without having to stop and reload. Fortunately the Bill stands little chance of ever becoming law. Other liberals such as New York’s Governor Cuomo’s The NY SAFE Act, which was championed and signed into law by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, bans all magazines that hold more than seven bullets and pre-1994 high capacity magazines, and prohibits the carrying of guns on school grounds. Unfortunately for New York State police departments no provisions were made for either the 7 round maximum rounds allowed in their service handguns or their ability to enter school grounds while they were armed. Cuomo and his associates are frantically now trying to revise the Bill to exempt police officers.
President Obama and his administration are in the midst of an all out assault on the 2nd Amendment and are pressuring everyone and anyone they think they can bully into caving in to their demands. For now it seems the Democrats up for election are lying low and will not vote for any new anti-gun laws. Sen. Harry Reed has also announced he will not bring to the floor any legislation that would fail and in doing so gives cover to his fellow Democrats who live in Red States. The Supreme Court has also ruled in favor of upholding the 2nd Amendment, let us hope and pray the conservative Justices stay healthy to keep the court center right. If there was ever a time when especially gun owners and 2nd Amendment advocates needed to be active it is now. The Liberals and Progressives will not stop their agenda of strict gun control and will look for any excuse to move to gun confiscation. It is imperative that all of us work to take over the Senate and maintain control of the House in the Mid-Term Elections in 2014. The future of our Constitutional right to own and carry firearms is at stake and once lost it will be lost forever.
